I've written before about the power of folksonomies. A folksonomy is a means of indexing a body of information that emerges organically from the users of that information.
The key to folksonomies on the Web is the tag, or keyword which users assign to images, websites or documents they produce and share.
Lately I've been exploring del.icio.us, a social bookmark site that is fuelled by tags. Del.icio.us can simply act as a web-based storage bin for your bookmarks. But, its real power comes when you tag and share your bookmarks with others. When a group of people start tagging sites, a folksonomy of the Web emerges.
I'm finding del.icio.us extremely valuable when I'm researching a topic that's fresh and evolving. I can easily find the sites on the topic that lots of people are using, right now. I can also subscribe to a RSS feed of my favourite tags. It's so cool how this all fits together.
