National Geographic has posted some remarkable tornado footage on its site.
Back in June of last year, storm chaser, Tim Samaras, adroitly positioned a red, conical "media probe" on the ground in Iowa corn country. The 80 pound probe, the size of a manhole cover, contained seven tiny video cameras (six of which functioned during the storm). The cameras capture the approach of the storm and catch the powerful tornado as it passes within 10 metres of the probe.
This sort of field data collection (it will help scientists calculate windspeeds in the bottom part of the twister) would have been impossible just a few years ago. It's fascinating to watch, though I failed to see a cow flying past.
